It's All About The Pink
Fashion for Dogs
Pink is everywhere. Sure, it's got something to do with spring. After months of dark dreary shades, everyone's ready for a little splash of color. Storefronts are shedding their winter skins and suddenly it seems like everywhere you look, pink, orange, blue and bright spring green abound.
But there's more to it than that. When it comes to dog accesories, pink is most definitely "in". Doggie fashion insiders swear that the trend really started with the release of Legally Blonde (2001), which featured a hip LA law student toting her chihuahua in a bright pink carrier. She brought "Barbie"-style pink back in fashion in a big way.
The trend grew even bigger last summer, with the release of the sequel, Legally Blonde 2. Now there was an entire line of pink accessories for pups inspired by the film, as well as the famous pink polka dot carrier. Pink was flying off the shelves. Everyone wanted a piece of pink.
Why is pink so popular for puppies? Kris Fellowes, owner of lulu jane elegant pet accessories, has a theory:
"The pet industry has continued this trend of 'pink' as pet accessories now follow the fashion trends of what is going on in the industry. Women comprise 89% of the buying power for pets; it only makes sense to make and design pet items that appeal to the women and her fashion sense. The response to pink is overwhelming. So many women have remarked how much they have missed this color. I will always carry a pink carrier or handbag in the lulu jane line."
Pink is definitely the fashion color de jour for Fido's two footed masters. Kathy Schultz, a reporter for Lucky Magazine, says that pink is "really huge" and available in nearly every imaginable shade. But pink isn't just for ladies any more. USA Today reports that men are also beginning to wear pink - from Huge Boss to the Gap, pink is in.
The question is, will it last? Or are dog moms and dads doomed to spending hundreds of dollars on a pink wardrobe and accessories only to find out that pink has become so five minutes ago?
We at Pampered Puppy believe that pink is going to stick around for a while when it comes to doggie fashion and other doggie products like carriers and beds. Let's face it. At times, we love treating our precious puppies like the princess that they are. And as long as we have princesses, we'll likely have pink.
Kris Fellowes agrees:
I believe the demand for pink in all things fashion will remain for a while because women love it and will demand it. The romantic influence in clothes brought pink quietly to the forefront of fashion until it exploded this year.
